Start Where You Stand

Many struggle to get started on goals because of fear, lack of clarity, procrastination, or overwhelming feelings. However, there are various strategies that we can use to overcome these barriers and start making progress towards our goals.

For example, breaking down a goal into smaller achievable tasks, starting with a simple and specific action plan, making a public commitment by sharing your goal with someone else, finding an accountability buddy, or seeking guidance or coaching from a mentor or professional.

Too often, we talk ourselves out of taking action because we feel that we have to figure everything out before launching. By simply taking action you can build momentum, overcome obstacles, and ultimately achieve your goals. General George Patton said, “a good plan violently executed now is better than a perfect plan executed next week.”

Self-talk is your number one enemy. Some of the things we tend to say that get in the way sound like: “I’ll do it when I feel more motivation.” One of the world’s greatest bodybuilding champions, serial movie star, and impactful politician, Arnold Schwarzenegger, often says “It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like it, just be useful.” Other times we say, “I’ll begin when I have more time.” I’ll start when I get more momentum.” Momentum is nonexistent without ever starting. “I’m trying to figure out what’s my passion.” You won’t discover your passion if you never explore new things.

No doubt launching into the unknown can be scary. Uncertainty makes us uncomfortable. But the truth is that most of the tools we need to succeed are picked up along the way. Not starting simply robs us of the opportunity to learn and grow, as we explore and discover along the journey.

Research studies support the fact that learning and growth occurs when we step out of our comfort zones. One study found that exposure to new and challenging experiences stimulates new neural connections. Additionally, seeking challenges and taking risks increases our creativity, problem-solving abilities, and performance.

So next time you find yourself ruminating, doubting, or finding excuses for not going after your goals, launch with confidence and excitement that learning and growing is just on the other side of the action.

“Do not wait: the time will never be just right. Start where you stand and work whatever tool you may have at your command and better tools may be found along the way.” – Napoleon Hill
