Leadership

The Power of Influence

I spent the better half of the day yesterday meeting with business partners to develop the strategy for our next real estate project. We had different ideas, strengths and weaknesses and slightly different priorities.  So how did we move forward? Progress required us to communicate effectively, listen actively, compromise and employ influence skills.

What are some of the common reasons we need to develop our influencing skills?

The list of reasons we need to learn influence is endless. This is a critical skill in leadership, but a common skill needed by most. Here are a few reasons that come to mind: Need to influence my boss to get the raise I have earned; give me more autonomy, trust me more, assign me challenging roles where I can grow and prove myself; I need to influence the team to surge efforts to get through this final phase of this important project; I need to influence the team to support this organizational change initiative; I need to set boundaries at work so that I can deliver the priorities tasks effectively; I need to influence the team to support the updated vision or strategic initiatives, or maybe it is influencing a boss to respect your time off with the family (some like to Slack employees at midnight, weekends or on vacations.)

Influence is a key component of effective leadership. It is the ability to inspire, persuade and motivate others towards a common goal. To influence more effectively, a leader must possess strong communication skills, a deep understanding of their team members’ needs and motivations, and an unwavering commitment to the vision.

The most powerful aspect of influence that a leader can demonstrate is to lead by example. A leader who demonstrates integrity, transparency, and a strong work ethic will earn the respect, loyalty and trust of his/her team members. This creates a positive work environment where team members are encouraged to follow the leader’s example and take ownership of their work.

Another important aspect of influence in leadership is empathy. A leader who takes the time to understand the unique concerns and perspectives of their team members will be better equipped to lead them. This involves active listening, asking questions, and recognizing each team member’s strengths and weaknesses. Knowing each member of the team enables leaders to influence each in the manner that is most conducive to them. Remember influence is done one person at a time. We all have unique needs, motivations, interests and personalities.

Influence and manipulation are not the same. Be careful not to come across as manipulating others. Influence is about fostering an environment or situation where people are open to new or different ideas. Influence can help both or all parties. Manipulation consists of coercion or forcing others to see or do things your way. Therefore, manipulation typically causes some to lose and others to win.

Finally, a successful leader must be able to effectively communicate their vision to their team members. This involves crafting a clear and concise message that inspires and motivates. The best leaders can articulate their vision in a way that resonates with their team members and gives them a sense of purpose and direction.
